Every Month is Whole Grain Month with Tribeca Oven

September is Whole Grain Month, and as it comes to a close we wanted to share some info on what whole grains are, how we’re using them, and why Tribeca Oven whole grain certified products are a cut above the rest. After all, when flour and grains are at the heart of everything you do, it’s like every month is Whole Grain Month!

Tribeca Oven 9 Grain Loaf

So, what are whole grains? It all begins in the fields where grains, like wheat, barley and oats, are grown and harvested. Each tiny kernel on the plant consists of bran, germ and endosperm.

“Whole grain” refers to harvested grains or foods which retain all of those parts of the kernel, and their nutrients. Whole grains are so good for you! The bran is an amazing source of fiber, B-vitamins and minerals, like zinc and magnesium; the endosperm provides carbohydrates for energy, along with protein and vitamins; and the germ (the core of the kernel) is packed with B-vitamins, vitamin E, phytochemicals and healthy fats.

According to the Mayo Clinic, ‘“Whole-grain foods help control cholesterol levels, weight and blood pressure. These foods also help lower the risk of diabetes, heart disease and other conditions.”

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends eating 6 ounces of grain foods daily (based on a 2,000-calorie diet) with at least half (3 ounces) of that grain intake from 100% whole grains.

Choosing whole grain bread is an easy way to up your whole grain intake. At Tribeca Oven, we offer a number of versatile whole grain products, like our Harvest Grain Baguette, 9 Grain Loaf and Honey Wheat Dinner Rolls. You can use our whole grain breads anywhere you’d use white bread, including sliced alongside cheese and butter boards, as the base for hearty sandwiches, for fancy toasts — the options are endless!

Not only are our whole grain breads good for your health, they’re also good for the planet. We honor our commitment to sustainability by sourcing the majority of our grains through the North Dakota Wheat Program, which includes farmers actively working to improve the sustainability of their agricultural practices through soil conservation, water quality, biodiversity expansion and more.
